Safety Begins With You

Property managers suggest you follow these prevention tips and work with your neighbors to protect the safety and security of your home.

INSIDE YOUR APARTMENT
Always Use Safety Devices.
Keep your doors and windows locked whenever possible while in your apartment, and be sure to lock them before leaving. Always use additional provided security devices and notify your property manager of any malfunctions.
Answering the Door.
Always identify your visitor before opening the door. Ask service personnel to present identification.
Keep Window Treatments Closed.
To prevent intruders from viewing the contents of your apartment, close curtains, blinds, and window shades at night and when you leave.
Lost Keys.
Immediately contact your property manager if you lose your apartment keys. Locks should be replaced immediately.

Smoke Detectors.
Check monthly for dead batteries and malfunctions.
Emergency Procedures.
Make sure children know how to dial "911" or the operator for help. Practice fire escape and other emergency procedures.
Report Suspicious Activities.
Immediately notify law enforcement authorities if you see criminal or suspicious activity, then notify your property manager.
Renter Insurance. Consider buying renter's insurance. It's inexpensive and will cover the loss of most of your items if they're stolen or damaged due to fire or water .

LEAVING YOUR APARTMENT
Turn on Radio and Lamps.
Before leaving, turn on a radio at moderate volume to give the impression someone is at home. If your apartment is unoccupied at night, install timers to turn on lights when it gets dark.
Do Not Hide Keys Outside.
Intruders may observe you hiding your apartment key outside or they could discover it by chance.
Avoid Walking Alone at Night.
Stay clear of dark areas when walking, park in well-lit areas, and report loiterers to the police.
Keep Entry Codes Confidential.
Do not give entry codes or electronic pass keys to anyone.
Ask Someone to Watch Your Home.
Ask you property manager, a trusted neighbor or a friend to keep an eye on your home when you go out of town.
Stop Deliveries When Traveling.
Temporarily halt your newspaper and mail deliveries or ask a friend to collect them when you are away for an extended period of time.
