Packing Like a Pro

Take it from the experts, proper packing is the key to a smooth moving day. This checklist will help you plan your packing to avoid problems.

GET PACKING MATERIALS
Boxes (Avoid unsanitary supermarket boxes)
Bubble wrap and packing paper (Caution: Newspaper ink rubs off.)
Packing tape , scissors, and rope or bungi cords
Furniture pads (Ask your truck rental company for a rental price.)

Jewelry and other valuables
Birth certificates, medical and dental records, passports
Legal and financial documents
Pen and paper
Light bulbs
Paper towels, and trash bags
Scissors, tools, flashlight
Prescription drugs
Aspirin and toilet paper!

PACK EARLY
Pack a little at a time, starting with off-season and rarely used items.
Label two sides of every box with the room it goes into.

KITCHENWARE
Line cartons with packaging material and wrap each piece separately. Place plates standing on their edges, not flat. Cushion boxes containing glasses and cups by using towels, potholders or other soft material.

CLOTHING
Leave clothing in drawers or pack in suitcases. Pack hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes so they arrive clean and pressed.

FURNITURE
Take apart BEDS and tape hardware to the frame. Protect mattresses with a fitted sheet or plastic cover.
Remove TABLE legs, pad and tie together. Tape hardware under the table top.
Wrap PAINTINGS and MIRRORS in blankets or rugs.
PACK YOUR TRUCK ¼ AT A TIME
Load largest items first. Pack floor to ceiling, heaviest items on the bottom. Tie mirrors and frames to truck walls or place between mattresses.
